UNICEF launches 3.3 bln USD to aid millions of Children

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on 31 January launched an appeal of 3.3 billion US dollars to provide emergency assistance in 48 countries around the globe, against the backdrop of ever increasing number of children driven from their homes due to conflicts, disasters and climate changes. The United States is by far the top donor to UNICEF, followed by Germany, Britain and the European Commission.

Ireland became the world’s first country to stop investing in fossil fuels

Ireland has voted to be the world’s first country to fully divest public money from fossil fuels. The Irish Parliament passed the historic legislation in a 90 to 53 vote in favour of dropping coal, oil and gas investments. Independent MP Thomas Pringle, who introduced the bill, said the bill would send a message to climate change deniers and lobbyists.

Alibaba made app helps find 611 missing Children in China

In today’s world where Child trafficking is rampant, a mobile app in China helped recover hundreds of missing Children last year. The ministry of public security has said that the app helped to find 611 missing Children in China. The mobile app named “Tuan Yuan”, or “Reunion” in Chinese was developed by Alibaba group holding Ltd was launched in 2016. This has allowed the police officers to share information work together.

Federal Judge temporarily blocks Trumph’s travel ban

A federal Judge in Washington state on 3rd February temporarily blocked enforcement of president Trump’s controversial ban on entry to the U.S, and airlines planned to begin allowing passengers from banned countries to board, according to a person familiar with the matter. The president’s order is intended to protect the homeland and he has the constitutional authority and responsibility to protect the American People.

World’s smallest Pacemaker unveiled in U.S.

The World’s smallest pacemaker, which is about as big as a large vitamin capsule and provides the most advanced pacing technology, has been successfully implanted for the first time in a patient in the U.S. The pacemaker is for patients with bradycardia, a condition characterized by a slow heartrate, usually fewer than 60 beats per minute. The device is the size of a large vitamin and unlike traditional pacemakers, it does not require cardiac wires or a surgical pocket under the skin to deliver a pacing therapies.

Queen Elizabeth – II marks Sapphire Jubilee

Queen Elizabeth II, the world’s longest reigning sovereign, on 6th February set a new record as the first British Monarch to reach her Sapphire Jubilee, with 65 years on the throne. Sudarsan Pattnaik Creates World Record with Tallest Sand Sculpture

Sand artist Sudarsan Patnaik on 10 February created a Guinness World Record by sculpting a more than 48 feet tall sand castle at Puri beach. Sudarsan along with 45 students of his sand Art Institute created this 48 feet 7 inch tall sculpture which beat the previous record which was in the name of a sand artist from USA. The record-breaking sculpture was built with a message of world peace and featured sculptures of Mahatma Gandhi, Gautama Buddha, and Nelson Mandela.

H1B and L1 reform Bill introduced in US House of Representatives

A legislation was introduced in the US House of Representatives on 03-01- 2017 which mandates the minimum salary of H-1B visa holders to be doubled to $130,000. This is more than double of the current salary of $60,000 which was established in 1989.The Lofgren bill, titled “High-Skilled Integrity and Fairness Act of 2017,” has been introduced at a time when there are reports that President Donald Trump might come up with an executive order to clamp down H-1B and L1 Visas.

India ranks 43rd in USCC’s IP Index

India ranked at 43rd position out of 45 countries in the 5th Annual International Intellectual property (IP) Index of the US Chamber of Commerce (USCC). IMF opens technical centre in New Delhi

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has opened a first of its kind South Asia Training and Technical Assistance centre (SARTTAC) in New Delhi for economic capacity building in South Asia. India clears a mega missile deal with Israel

A Rs.17,000 crore deal has been cleared by the government for jointly developing with Israel a Medium Range Surface-to- Air Missile (MR-SAM) for the army, reflecting India’s fast growing defence ties with the Jewish country. SC Clears plan to Verify mobile phone users through Aadhar

The Supreme court approved the government’s plan to record the identification details of mobile users through an e-KYC (Know Your Customer) mechanism linked to Aadhaar in a bid to enhance national security and prevent fake users. The mechanism could cover at least 100 crore mobile phone subscribers, 90% of whom use prepaid cards.

Govt appoints 3 directory to RBI Central Board

Govt to make “Aadhar” compulsory to ration from PDS shops

The Govt of India on 9 February announced that people who have ration cards under the National Food Security Act need to undergo Andhar Authentication Process to receive their further subsidies. This notification comes into effect from today. The Union Govt has launched “Bharat QR Code” a quick response (QR) code to enable digital payments without card swiping machines. It is world’s first interoperable payment acceptance solution launched by Indian Government to move towards less-cash economy. The Government doubled the maternity leave for women Working in industries from the existing three months to six months. However, the benefit will be restricted to women who make a monthly contribution to the employees state insurance corpus from their salaries. About 29 lakh Women Working across various industries will be benefitted by the move.

The Telangana government has launched India’s first Social innovation center. The Kakatiya Hab for Social Innovation in Nizamabad. This hub was funded by the Telangana Govt and implemented through Kakatiya Sandbox will function like a rural incubator to encourage entrepreneurship at the grassroots level. The rural incubator in Telangana will be run exactly in the same as any other high-end incubator like the T-Hub, the country’s biggest, located in Hyderabad.

First smart Police Station inaugurated in Andhra Pradesh

First smart police station of the country inaugurated by CM of Andhra Pradesh N. Chandrababu Naidu in the state. The Model Police Station in Andhra Pradesh in build like a corporate office building with plush interiors and green environment. The First Smart Police Station opened at Nagarampalem in the capital region Amaravathi. The Model Police Station will work on smart policing system that will make the police process much transparent.

National Women’s Parliament begins in Andhra Pradesh

India’s First National Women’s Parliament (NWP) began on 10 February 2017 in Amaravathi, the new capital of Andhra Pradesh. The three day conference, which is the first of its kind, is being organised by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. The theme of the conference is “Empowering Women-Strengthening Democracy”. This inaugural session was attended by spiritual Buddhist leader Dalai Lama and Andhra Pradesh CM. N. Chandrababu Naidu.

NCS and Jeevan Pramaan Facility for EPFO Pensioners Launched in Hyderabad

The Union Minister of state for labour and Employment Bandaru Dattatreya launched the National Career Service (NCS) for youths and Jeevan Pramaan Facility to EPFO pensioners through post offices at Dak sadan in Hyderabad. The post offices will serve as an Employment Registration Centers for Unemployed rural youth on behalf of the NCS.

Supreme Court convicted Sasikala in disproportionate assets case

The Supreme Court of India (SC) on 14 February 2017 convicted Sasikala disproportionate assets case. It over ruled a Karnataka High Court’s Judgement in a disproportionate assets case related to Sasikala. The ruling of the SC renders Sasikala ineligible to contest Assembly elections. The Judgement was delivered by a bench of the apex court comprising Justices PC Ghose and Amitava Roy.

Kerala Govt gave approval for Airport in Sabarimala

The Kerala Cabinet gave its approval for construction of an airport in Hindu Pilgrimage Centre Sabarimala. The approval was given by the cabinet at a meeting Chaired by the State Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on 15 February 2017 in Thiruvananthapuram. The airport is expected to reduce the heavy traffic on the roads leading to Sabarimala during the Pilgrim season.


Maharashtra Approves Rs. 250 crore Cloud Seeding Programme

The State Govt of Maharashtra has approved a Rs.250 crore Cloud Seeding Programme to experiment whether cloud seeding produces sufficient rain. Seeding is a technique which involves spraying chemicals into clouds. Under this programme the weather scientists will fly Aeroplanes loaded with Silver Iodide and Dry ICE over clouds. The programme is coordinated by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.

31st State Hood Day of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram 20 February

On 20 February 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has greeted people of two states Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram on their 31st state hood day. Germany Opens Consulate Office in Hyderabad

Federal Republic of Germany on 21 February opened an Honorary Consulate Office at Madhapur in Hyderabad. Achim Fabig German Consul General for Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry and BVR Mohan Reddy Honorary Consul of Germany for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh opened Honorary Consulate Office in Hyderabad. The office of the Honorary Consul will also provide limited consular assistance in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

National Biodiversity Congress 2017 in Kerala

The Third National Biodiversity Congress (NBC) 2017 held at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on February 22,2017. The NBC is hosted by the Kerala State Biodiversity Board. This year event is comprises programmes including conference, Exhibition, capacity building workshops and Children Biodiversity Congress. National Biodiversity Conference, governed by a national advisory committee comprising biodiversity experts on 23rd and 24th February as a part of NBC.

Rajasthan becomes 2nd Largest Crude Oil Producer in India

Rajasthan Governor Announced that Rajasthan has become the second largest crude oil producer in India. The oil fields in the state were producing nearly 90 lakh tonnes oil annually which accounted for 24% of the total domestic crude oil production. On the other hand, The Bombay High, an offshore oil field of Mumbai is the largest producer of crude oil in India which accounts for 50% of the total domestic crude oil production.

Indian Tabla player Sandeep Das wins 2017 Grammy Award

Indian Tabla player Sandeep Das on 13 February 2017 won the 59th Annual Grammy Award for the Best Global Music Category. He won the award for Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble “Sing Me Home” Yo-Yo Ma’s ‘Sing Me Home’ features tunes composed by different artists at global level. Milind Soman an Indian Supermodel and the national level swimmer successfully completed a 517.5 km race, an extremely high endurance event called “Ultraman” recently held in Florida. The race that was divided into three days included swimming, cycling and running. The 51-year- old man completed the whole event barefoot and gaining the title Ultraman.

The 89th Academy Awards, popularly called Oscar Awards, were conferred on 27 February 2017 as per the Indian Time. The Award ceremony was held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Shooting World Cup India bag 1Gold, 1 Silver Medals

India on 27th February bagged two medals, a gold and silver, at the Shooting World Cup in New Delhi. In the 10m mixed team air pistol event, duo of Jitu Rai and Heena Sidhu clinched the Gold for India, making it the first Gold in this event for the country. Jity teamed up with Heena to finish ahead of Japan’s Yukari Konishi and Tomoyuki Matsuda 5-3. Slovenia’s Naphaswan Yangpaiboon and Kevin Venta were placed third.
